This Friday, May 4th, I will be participating in the ArtWeek celebration in Pittsfield, MA. The Lichtenstein Center for the Arts will have open studios including Rick Casucci, Peg Dotchin, Stefanie Weber, Jim Horsford, and me during the First Fridays Artswalk from 5-8pm. As part of the ArtWeek celebration some of us will be showing our processes and give a little more behind the scenes look at the artist's life: details at www.firstfridaysartswalk.com. I will be giving a drawing and painting demonstration on work that I will have on display in my solo show at the Lichtenstein Gallery in August. So come see the demo and on the opening you can say, "I was there when he made that!"
For the first time I will be demonstrating my silver pen drawing technique. As part of the demo I will have silver pens for you to experiment with, so if you've never drawn silver on black, come by and have a go at it! This is a chance to see the development of a composition from start to finish. After the drawing demonstration I will be giving an oil glazing demo on some large paintings I am creating for the Lichtenstein Gallery. My technique of building up painting through roughly 30 layers of oil paint can't be demonstrated beginning to end, but I will show you the process for a single layer on several paintings. Glazing produces a unique experience as light penetrates the layers then reflects back out making the canvas look like it is emitting light. A striking technique that I am happy to share with people.
