This Friday, August 3rd, I will be holding a reception for my first solo show at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts! Although I have had many solo shows in the past, none have been in a space quite this large. In preparation, I have made several new large scale paintings to fit the beautiful venue. As I am hoping to see many new faces at this reception, I will be giving a brief introduction to my work as part of the opening. The talk will start at 5:30pm, August 3rd, and I will be available the rest of the reception if anyone wants to ask questions one on one. If you cannot make the reception, the show will be on display from August 1st through August 31st, so make sure to stop in.
Dreaming of Light is a culmination of the last fifteen years of my work. I have continually refined my process. Experimenting with subjects, colors, and mediums, I have continued to search for the best expression of my inner thoughts. The colors have been refined to a set which combine in fascinating ways. A glazing technique gives a sense of illumination emanating from within the oil paintings. And silver pen and pastel drawings reinforces the underlining composition of the collection. Like a tuning fork all these elements combine to give my work a presence that cannot be ignored; and with all of them together they become a passionate symphony.
I titled the show Dreaming of Light because the subject matter of my work is ambiguous like a dream. The figures in my work strive for the light in their world that illuminates them. Simultaneously light is the focal point of every scene and the element that describes the world. But what of these worlds? What are they? Where? For what end? Like a dream, the answers are many, and changing. The scenes are not single stories, but plethora of possible narratives that only reveal themselves when you apply your own history, your own story. My work isn't the interpretation of a dream, but the creative spark that becomes a dream. What light will you dream about?
